Swan’s vs. Hawthorn- no one cares…

Melbourne has so much pride in sport just like any other city in Aus but in terms of the AFL grand final it is not as important to have watched the game as long as at the end of the day your drunk. Maybe this post was prompted by my resent for working in a footy pub where the people would rather sing their teams anthem and drink 10 thousand million, billion carlton draughts (the worst beer in the world) whilst riding a bar stool. Why not, it’s a free country. But is it? Really? Is Melbourne more a drinking culture than a sporting culture? I know it’s irrelevant when it come to travel but if you wanted to know some drinking spots to immerse yourself greatly here you are: cheap is best!

A Commodity of Fetishism

Melbournions have a undeniable fetish with the alternate side of life, or otherwise known as ‘sahh indie’. With there crazy emotions and music trippin’ minds you’d think they were all corduroy wearing Bob Dylan’s stuck in the 80’s. But you’d not think twice about the private life of what this indie fetishism’s turns into after dark if you were an innocent passer by. Like in any city there is a certain need of the commodity of individuality but Melbourne is pushing this to a whole different level. Brunswick st for example is crawling with the calm, cool, collected individual with a logo shirt and strangling body piercings. The only thing about it that they are some how conforming to melbournes 2nd hand yet consuming culture which as a result leaves no indi-ness to be had. Its all a sad ploy of originality but melbs defines itself against the norm of nothingness. Where everything is different and diverse. Thats why Melbourne is so great. Yet in traveling a persons sense of self gets disorientated when moving from suburb to suburb. South Yarra streets are filled with the cliche range rover driving mums yet just round the corner are the melbournes underprivelge community housing residence. The beauty of Melbourne people is that they live spacial so close together but there never seems to be an uncomfortable cultural and social divide. This is why Melbourne is such a great place to travel and live especially as a student.

You have to live breath and experience melbourne to truely understand its fetishism nature.

the weather outside is… weather

Yet another miserable day in Melbourne… After not seeing the sun in days the city has gone grey and the grass has gone wet and cold. There is nothing to do but curl up in bed with a good book and a hot chocolate. ‘Chill’ is the word of the day, whether you are chilling on the steps of fed square or literally chilling your hands off at parklife in the cold , melbs weather will wear you around like a pair of old gum boots that have the backs cut out of them. Don’t let it dampen your spirits of living on the weekend though. Go something indoors and away from the miserable sky.

FREE BEER

Melbourne on a student budget is not as cheap as Radelaide but nothing compared with Sydney. The wonderful thing about Melbourne is that it has obvious self confidence and sass. It’s the type of self confidence that struts down bridge road with bags of fashion bags, while shooting you a smouldering look and finishing with a flick of their indie haircuts. My friends account of his newly discovered Melbourne identity explains the city well. “Recently I felt as though I was not conforming to the Melbourne model so i trained myself down to Doctor Follicles which i heard was a cheap cut. I walked out with a smug look on my face, thinking that i look dayumm fine with my hip new do, this false self confidence probably came from the free beer that i received while getting my hair cut.
